Welcome To
Being located centrally in Cornwall gives the Pier House Hotel easy access to everything the county has to offer. It has plenty to enjoy right on its doorstep too, with the stunning south coast charming on every turn.
The surrounding area boasts a wealth of attractions that include the world-renowned Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan. What’s more, this is the perfect spot for discovering Poldark country. Here’s our guide of things to do in and near Charlestown during your visit.
The Lost Gardens of Heligan
Just a short drive away, The Lost Gardens of Heligan were remarkably only uncovered some 25 years ago from a tangle of weeds. Heligan has since become one of the country’s most loved gardens among families and travellers alike. It’s easy to see why, with more than 200 acres of bliss to explore. You’ll find a sub-tropical jungle and an ancient woodland that’s home to rare plant species and an abundance of wildlife.
Poldark Country
The historic fishing port of Charlestown was a prime filming location for Poldark, so why not wander down from your hotel room to the Grade II listed harbour and see if you can spot a Tall Ship? Gazing upon the village’s quaint, unspoiled cottages is a treat in itself.
Charlestown also enjoys easy access to Bodmin Moor, which is featured in many of the series’ more dramatic scenes. Fans may also recognise the town of Bodmin itself, where Ross was tried.
The Eden Project
The Pier House Hotel is just a 10-minutes drive from the Eden Project. This fascinating visitor attraction boasts its own tropical rainforest and Mediterranean garden, both housed within giant biomes. You’ll get to marvel at rare plants that have been collected from diverse climates and environments from across the world.
Adrenaline junkies can get their fix on the Skywire, England’s longest zip wire, or climb to the top of the biomes on the rainforest canopy walkway. The Eden Project offers a fun day out for the whole family, hosting events throughout the year, with plenty of things to keep curious minds interested.
St Austell Brewery Visitor Centre
The St Austell Brewery Visitor Centre’s interactive Brewing Experience reveals the secrets behind our award-winning ales, with tastes included of course! If you like what you taste, pick up a selection of beer and gifts from the Visitor Centre shop, or enjoy some hearty pub grub, coffee, and cake at the Hicks Bar.
Fowey
Discover Fowey, a charming seaside town that was once home to esteemed author, Daphne Du Maurier. Watch the world go by in one of its many pubs and cafes, visit the literary centre, and walk the South West Coast Path via the local beaches. You can even explore the area along the water, either by boat, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard. If you fancy a spot of culture, be sure to visit us during the Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature, a celebration of words, music, and art.
Lanhydrock House
Fall under the spell of Lanhydrock’s magnificent Victorian country house and gardens. A beautifully kept National Trust property, step back in time and uncover the two sides of Victorian life with the contrast of ‘upstairs’ and ‘downstairs’ living. Or, explore the gardens and surrounding woodland with riverside paths, ancient trees, and an abundance of wildlife. Keen cyclists also come here for its excellent off-road trails.
Day Sailing
Explore the best of Cornwall’s southern coastline from the water with a full or half-day chartered sailing experience. Charlestown Harbour’s stunning fleet of traditional wooden-built boats includes a 1930s Topsail Schooner, Anny, and a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter, Mascotte. Learn how to hoist the sails, trim the rig, take the wheel, and set a course across the glistening blue haven of St Austell Bay.
Leisurely pursuits are also available. Sit back with the wind in the sails and only the sound of the birds above and waves beneath. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, including basking sharks, seals, and even dancing dolphins.
Full-day sails offer a freshly prepared feast for lunch – a picnic of local delicacies and a glass of wine served on the upper deck.
